Instructor Services

The Learning Center, located in T.4300, provides academic support to all MCTC students.  Our goal is to help all students succeed in college.  Strong connections with faculty are essential to our mission and success.  Here are highlights of the services and initiatives targeted for MCTC faculty. 

Learning Center Website – visit our website regularly for hours of operation, mini-session schedules, and tutor/subject schedule.

Faculty Recommendation Form – all our student tutors have been faculty selected; at any time faculty may recommend students to tutor in the Learning Center; contact John or download the Faculty Recommendation Form on the website.

Student Usage Reports – reports on student usage of the Learning Center are generated each semester and posted on the website; reports on single subjects are available upon request.

Study Resources – in the Learning Center and on the website there are hundreds of study resources organized by subject.

Smarthinking Online Tutoring – Smarthinking connects MCTC students to certified tutors anytime, from any Internet connection; contact us to request a password to preview Smarthinking for your students.

Faculty Survey – an annual survey proves faculty with a mechanism to provide input on the operation of the Learning Center. 

Supplemental Instruction – Supplemental Instruction is a student facilitated academic support program that targets historically difficult courses with out-of-class review sessions; contact John to request an SI Leader for your course.

Tours – bring your class into the Learning Center for a tour and/or to have someone visit your class to talk about Learning Center services, contact Shari to schedule

Tutors in the classroom – tutors can be placed in classroom on occasions when class activities merit the additional support.

Mini-sessions for students – topics covered in faculty lead mini-sessions are scheduled to either reinforce instruction in Math, English, ESOL, Nursing, Reading, and Chemistry classes or to provide students with support with college survival skills (e.g., time management, note taking).

Faculty Release Credits – annually the Learning Center seeks proposals for faculty lead projects to support the Center with its mission.  Contact John to submit a proposal or discuss an idea for a proposal.

Office hours and study groups in the Learning Center – faculty are encouraged to hold some of their office hours in the Center; also to hold study groups, writing conferences, or test review groups in the Center either on a regular basis or as needed.

Promote the Learning Center in your syllabus - we encourage you to announce our services to your students in your syllabus.  Sample advertisement:

The Learning Center provides free tutoring by appointment or on a walk-in basis with both student tutors and professional tutors. There is a Computer Lab inside as well, with tutors who can help you if you are inexperienced using the computer, need help with an online course, would like assistance with a computer course. Additionally, the Learning Center offers regular mini-sessions on topics in math, English, ESOL, Chemistry, Nursing, and college survival skills.
